Just over a month after legendary Perth hip hop artist and SBX crew member Robert Hunter’s passing, the long awaited Australian Hip Hop Supports CanTeen compilation album is released today.

The album, which features the Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Koolism and of course Hunter himself, has developed into a double CD album, featuring a number of established and up-and-coming Australian hip hop artists.

Hunter passed away on Thursday the 20th of October at Murdoch Hospice, Western Australia, after a two-year battle with cancer. His mother Trish and son Marley survive him.

SBX crew member Porsah Laine, who worked with Hunter on the CanTeen compilation album said, “I was hoping that Hunter would see the completion of his amazing project, but I’m happy the pain has gone. He’s set a standard for us all to, even in the face of death, follow your passion, and always help others.”

Suffa from the Hilltop Hoods said about the album in a promotional video earlier this year that it was “Good music for a good cause, you’d kind of be a prick if you didn’t buy the album”.

SBX queen Layla said, “I feel truly honoured to be a part of this quality release, supporting such an important cause.”

Executive music producer Dazastah said, “It’s a mammoth album to listen to but it’s awesome, it has got a really good vibe about it.”

Virtual socio-phobes, GOAT MOB are seldom seen at nightclubs, festivals or other communal shindigs. It is believed they spend most of their waking life underground, practising their primitive form of music and imbibing in strange herbs and potions.

Emerging from the midst of Melbourne’s underground, the latest production from the illustrious Crate Cartel crew is Goatmob. Both emcees and producers respectively, the complimentary alliance that is Geko and Aetcix successfully combine their individual styles to bring this peculiarly alluring project to fruition. Goatmob reunites the duo again after collaborating on previous projects such as 2007’s Raw Four EP and the recent One Fell Swoop EP.

In essence, the album is the result of cathartically unconscious writing, steering clear of contrived attempts to cover any particular topics. Though experimental and multifarious musically, the trademark sounds of old-school gritty samples are constant throughout

With guest appearances from Melbourne’s 1/6 (Ilzilla), Fatty Phew, Budsa, as well as fellow Crate Cartellions Fluent Form and Maundz. Verses flow seamlessly to inclusively simulate a casual exchange of bars between cohorts. RTIST Gallery is proud to announce the first Melbourne solo exhibition by street artist Fintan Magee opening Friday the 18th & Saturday the 19th of November.

The Paper Plains collection of paintings, drawings and installation works add an unexpected magic to the mundane and forgotten objects of everyday life. The world may be round, but a box can still provide hours of entertainment to those with a little imagination.

Born in Lismore NSW, and growing up in Brisbane, Fintan Magee began drawing as a young child. Exposed to Brisbane's graffiti culture in his teens Magee began to scrawl his name across the city in large vibrant letter forms.Moving away from traditional graffiti in recent years, Magee has started to explore new ideas and imagery within his painting. In the last year he has created some of the largest and most striking street pieces in Australia.

His bold guerilla mural works often combine still life painting of found objects with installation elements. Magee's works explore themes of waste, consumption, loss and transition. They contain a sentimentality and softness influenced by children’s books.While many artists sustain their lifestyles with day jobs unrelated to their creative practice, Magee hones his skills regularly in gainful employment as one of Brisbane's premier muralists. He has been responsible for many of Brisbane’s progressive new large scale public artworks, which frequently pop up around Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs.

Magee’s work can also be seen gilding the interior of many local restaurants, clubs and hip clothing stores. More recently in the lead up to his first Melbourne solo show, Magee has coloured the city with various murals and paste-ups, including a 3 story mural in West Melbourne.

The diligence, technical skill and progressive approach Magee employs in his work has already received acclaim across the country. Magee has been a finalist of the Prometheus, Lethbridge and Churchie art awards and this year won the Cliftons Art Prize ‘People’s Choice’ Award. He has painted across Australia, Europe and the USA and his work adorns the walls of many discerning art collectors

Reason’s Window of Time is the final solo effort of his pioneering career, a true testament to his twenty plus years of dedication to Australian hip hop and reflective of his journey thus far. Window of Time, in essence, is intended to open minds and expose its listener to a mélange of historical, situational and currently pressing themes. "There is music for all generations throughout the release. Conceptually, the album is for the youth, party goers, intelligentsia, the purists and the recent graduates to this very unique sound. I’ve taken my time, spent painstaking hours refining my lyrics, requesting musical changes and thus the process has in short, been a worthy experience. Reason, both a school teacher and youth workshop facilitator, takes actualities to words with the intention of inspiring positive action. The album’s conceptual roots are of a worldly emphasis in contrast to the artists previous releases that were more indicative of his local scene. From the ferocity of Rep the Legacy featuring Lazy Grey, to the dark soundtrack-esque tones of Action featuring Lotek, and the sonorous sentiment within I Want featuring Suffa; Window Of Time is an engaging exhibition of melodic texture.

Title track Window of Time epitomises Reason’s passion for history, and the importance of education in everyday life personifying the idea of ‘words from a teacher’. Run Tingz featuring AJ (UK) and Iron Braydz (UK), is an impressive exchange between three emcees from different walks of life, the track demonstrates the unifying effect of shared passion. We Come From An Era featuring Hau (Koolism, triple J’s hip hop show), is a generational sift through the idiosyncrasies which defined the times from which the two emcees grew up.

In typical Reason style, there are guests aplenty throughout the album. Sharing mic duties are world class emcees and vocalists including Lazy Grey, Bias B, Hau, Dialectrix, Hunter, Iron Braydz (UK), Lotek (UK), AJ (UK), Joyride, KYE, Mdusu, Rachel Berry & Rapaport. The album credits superb production from Suffa, Debris, Debate, Seanie B, Mdusu, Simplex, Geko & WIZDM. THE PSYDE PROJECTS - LIVE @ REVOLVER, NOV 12

Late last year The Psyde Projects went off on their first ever tour to promote their debut album, 'Welcome to Boomtown'. After their very successful album launch, their hit single 'Kay-Pee-Em' got picked up by Australia's national music radio show, Triple J, which received great reviews and was played on high rotation!
This year they're set to tour nationally again to promote their second 6 track EP aptly titled 'The Psyde Projects: Volume II'. Whilst still staying true to the sampling culture of early hip-hop producers, this recent effort takes their sound into slightly more electronic territory. Watch Triple J Unearthed for the unveiling of their new single off the EP called 'O'rfd', a track that always gets bums off seats at their shows.

The final show of the tour will be held at Melbourne's Revolver and will also feature local powerhouse duo Low Budget, the almighty OMG's, and the laid back Renovator's Dream as the support acts.

Trem – For The Term Of His Natural Life - out now

In a time capsule unearthed in an overgrown train yard on the outskirts of Melbourne, archaeologists discover a dirt encrusted artefact, a codex of the art and science of hip hop based on a blueprint etched in concrete during a period of innovation. It bears the marks of the late 1980s and early 90s when the elemental standards were laid down by a small elite.

The artefact in question is For The Term of His Natural Life, the debut solo LP from Australia’s finest lyrical craftsman, Trem One. To say début is misleading, though. With a small but revered discography including two sought after vinyl EPs and his work with the Lyrical Commission on his own Unkut Recordings label, Trem is an elder statesman. Finally, For The Term… makes good on all the promises of his back catalogue. Following up on 2010’s rapturously received teaser single Omega Man, this project hits every target set for it.

Like many kids, Hopsin wanted to be “cool”. But as hard as he tried, he never graduated past being that “weird black kid” that rode around on a skateboard. He tried to get attention by making people laugh, but he always ended up being the butt of the joke. He wrote songs for girls to get them to like him, but got no love.

Stuck in special education classes, Hopsin did not see much of a future. His teachers did nothing but reinforce the feelings that he wouldn’t amount to anything; especially if he continued to waste his time attending classes where nothing was actually being taught. So with no money and only a few real friends, Hopsin dropped out of school in 2004.

Hopsin gets his inspiration from all types of music, from 50 Cent & Alicia Keyes to the All American Rejects. His creativity and raw energy come from all the people in his life that have told him that he didn’t have a future. At times his lyrics can be dark and grimy, but they only reflect all of the negativity that he has had to endure in order to get to where he is today.

Born and raised in Southern California, SwizZz is not your stereotypical MC. Through his music, SwizZz reveals a wide range of experiences, much of which he credits to his biracial background. He is not, nor does he claim to be, a "thug" or a "gangsta", but prides himself on being able to reach the masses by being honest about his confrontations with life's challenges. It is not always glamorous or positive, but you can count on SwizZz being true to himself.

SwizZz is inspired by all type of music, from hip-hop and alternative rock, to trance and R&B. Growing up in the notorious Bed-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, Kane was educated first hand in the rapidly expanding culture of Hip Hop. He found strong influence in the lyrical proficiency of Grandmaster Caz from the Cold Crush Brothers and as a late teenager he joined a local group called the Juice Crew headed by legendary Marley Marl. During this time he was also a writer for many peers in the game, Biz Markie and Roxanne Shante who were also Juice Crew members. His first single in 1987 called ‘Raw’ was a nonstop barrage of abuse upon the mic without a pause for breath, Kane had proven he had what it took and stole centre spotlight from the Juice Crew only to pursue a solo identity. During the early 1990s, Jay-Z is known to have been Big Daddy Kane’s hype man, and Kane helped him early on in his career.

It's amazing to think that in a career spanning over 25 years Australia has never witnessed the magic of a Big Daddy Kane live show...that wait ends in October with a show promising to deliver all the classics that influenced countless MCs and defined to many a generation and lifestyle.

Nearing their 25th anniversary, ROCK DA CITY crew have been striving since 1987 and lifting their graffiti game to new heights. Prowla, co-designing and developing graffiti based architecture - The Hive. Jors, running Melbourne based hip hop outlet This Is It. Grits, recently winning the Australian Ironlak piece competition and Jase Beathedz, continuing his music production and mixing for the likes of Pegz, Patto, Eloquor, NFA, Dizz1, music for TV shows like Summer Heights High and graff workshops for the next generation of young writers. Both Shem and Jors are currently featured in the worldwide Thames and Hudson graffiti alphabets book titled Streetfonts.

The sky really is the limit, with numerous projects on the go including Shem and Jors latest venture Royal Deviates. Stay tuned for a limited edition book from Jors, Royal Deviates clothing and the mammoth work in progress, the 25th Anniversary hard cover release of Royal Deviates featuring Jors and Shem’s life work to date. Including active crew members, guest affiliates and an accompanying soundtrack.

As crews and generation’s of peers retire or fade away into history, don’t call these writers oldschool. With their technical letter styles, entrenched in New York and Melbourne graffiti tradition these forward thinkers are only getting started.

The Red Bull Wreckers Yard 2011 Trans Tasman Final hits Melbourne this Saturday 25th June at The Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy. Red Bull Wreckers Yard has been taking street art culture from dark alleyways and train tracks to the people. Over a whirlwind past four weeks, the 7 finalists beat the best local graff artists in their hometown in a live painting round robin for the chance to represent their city at the Trans Tasman Final this weekend!

The 2011 finalists are Itch (Melbourne), Peque (Sydney), William (Perth), Store (Adelaide), Gimiks (Brisbane), Yelz (Wellington) and Seekayem (Auckland). Also competing as a wild card entry will be 2010 champion Sofles. The night will be hosted by Melbournes own MC Briggs and will feature a post-competition performance from New Zealands MC David Dallas!

What will go down at the Wreckers Yard? The artists will be provided with a blank canvas and cans of Ironlak paint. Each round competitors will be given a theme to paint one minute before the clock starts. Some examples of themes could include greed, lust, nature, fear or freedom. The artists will then have to spray according to the theme. The judging criteria include creativity, style and theme interpretation.

The winners from each of the seven qualifiers have already scored themselves a great prize pack including Skullcandy and G-Shock gear and a trip to Melbourne to compete in the final. This Saturday the Red Bull Wreckers Yard Trans Tasman Final will determine Australia and New Zealand's best graff artist with the winners taking home a share of $2,500, prize packs and the opportunity to graff part of Red Bull HQ in Sydney.

Red Bull Wreckers Yard is taking street art culture from dark back alleys and the train tracks to the people. The best graff artists across Australia and New Zealand have been hand-picked to showcase their creative skill in a legit location.

This unique competition consists of a seven city qualifiers: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Auckland and Wellington. Each qualifier will host eight of the best graff artists from that region to battle it out against one another, displaying their artistic flair, whilst spraying against the clock.

Artists will be provided with just a blank canvas and cans of spray paint to do their thing. Each round will be based on a theme, given to the competitors a minute out from the start of the round. Some examples of themes could include greed, lust, nature, fear or freedom. The artists will then have to spray according to the theme.

As the rounds go on, the time limit increases, but the canvas size gets smaller, pushing the boundaries of creativity. The judging criteria include creativity, style and theme interpretation.

The winners from each of the seven qualifiers will score themselves cool prize pack including Skullcandy and G-Shock gear and a trip to Melbourne, to compete in the Red Bull Wreckers Yard Trans Tasman Final!

The finalists will go head-to-head to determine Australia and New Zealand’s best graff artist. The winner will take home $1,000 of cold, hard, cash, the chance to design a set of limited edition Skullcandy headphones and the opportunity to graff part of the Red Bull HQ office in Sydney.

Right in front of their eyes, not down some dark lane-way or train track. We were somewhere around Perth on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold…..

Fear and Loathing is the new album by Syllabolix heavyweights Hunter and Mortar. Against overwhelming odds the pair shine like beacons of light on a dark desert highway, rising above all expectations. Hell-bent on bringing joy to the masses, wisdom to the unenlightened, hope to the hopeless and on occasion booze to the party... but don’t count on it. Fear and Loathing is a hard-up, full-frontal recount on just how it is.

During the making of the album both artists had undertaken life changing afflictions and were forced to leave behind their reckless ways, plunging into a world of doctor’s appointments, blood tests, scans, pills, more pills and more problems.

In late 2009 whilst Mortar was on sick leave from work he received a dismal phone call from Hunter, who, as it happened had been admitted to hospital only to be diagnosed with terminal Neuro Endocrine Cancer of the Pancreas with Metastasis to liver. So with the ironically sobering reality that life was now marching double-time, the two turned on the mic and spewedforth the Fear and Loathing conspiring within. Thus began the recount of an epic journey.

It’s not all doom and gloom however; the album crediting the likes of the formidable Flash One, ARIA award winning Hilltop Hoods, and fellow SBX stalwarts Dazastah, Optamus, mighty queen Layla and the kid Graphic. Handling all driving duties on the beats is Mortar with DJ Defyre thumbing a lift to help navigate on the deck duties.

The Silent Titan aka Tommy Fiasko, of the Thundamentals is a Blue Mountains based artist drawing influence from producers such as DJ Premier, Black Milk, J Dilla and local Australian stalwarts Hermitude. The Silent Titan flips his unique style upon the album, while developing a body of music which is sure to be heard loud and clear in the modern hip hop movement.

The album is laced with hip hop tradition and a love of classic soul, jazz, and psychedelic music. The album sparkles with detail, utilizing classic breaks, programmed synthesis and beats, over lush melodic samples.
